This course will examine God’s design for marriage and family life and how couples and families develop problems when they deviate from His design. Biblical solutions will be presented as a means of restoring God’s design. A “Family Systems” approach to relationship problems will also be included. Lecture and role-play will be used.
GOALS:
- The learner will be exposed to the following components for marital counseling: biblical knowledge, choice theory, sexuality, communication skills, conflict resolution, divorce, research re: why marriages succeed or fail, and counseling skills.
- The learner will be exposed to the following components for family counseling: biblical knowledge, knowledge of family systems, parenting skills, causes of family dysfunction, and blended families.
WHO WILL BENEFIT:
- Every pastor desiring to rethink and learn new insights, principles, and procedures for helping marriages and family systems.
- Young men preparing for ministry who desire teaching in these matters, along with the experience of observing interactions involving class participants who have experience with marriage and family counseling.
- Any layperson who has similar desires as those above.
Important note about this class: This course can be taken not-for-credit or for credit (MA, MDiv or DMin) from Grace Seminary or for credit from Grace Graduate School in Counseling (MA). THOMAS J. EDGINGTON has earned an M.A. in Biblical Counseling and an M.Div. from Grace Theological Seminary, along with a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Ball State University. He is a professor of counseling at Grace Schools. For more than twenty years, he has been teaching and counseling in the field of psychology and counseling. Currently, he is a professor in the Masters in Counseling program at Grace College. Along with his college teaching, he teaches at Grace Seminary in the M.Div. in Counseling program. He and his wife (Linda) reside in Leesburg, Indiana. They have three children Callie (24 and married), Nathan (22 and a recent Grace College graduate), and Ryan (19 and a recent H.S. graduate).
