In this course the belief systems of major religions are studied with a view to understanding why the tenets make sense and drive behavior for the adherents. How each religion affects the host culture and how the culture affects the religion will be explored. The inadequacies of each belief system will be discussed in light of the adequacy of christianity, thus, an introductory understanding of Biblical theology is assumed.
GOALS:
- To become acquainted with the major religions of the world and their impact.
- To understand the basic beliefs and worldviews of each religion, and how those beliefs affect adherents’ lives.
- To understand how the major non-christian religions stand in contrast to christianity.
WHO WILL BENEFIT:
- Every pastor desiring to understand alternative faith systems because of the plurality of religious beliefs prevailing in our country.
- Young men preparing for ministry who wish to understand alternative faith systems and their influences on those who serve christ.
- Any lay persons wanting to expand their knowledge of alternative faith systems.
Important note about this class: This course can be taken not-for-credit or for credit from Grace Seminary. If taken for credit, it can be used either for Doctoral credit or for Masters credit in the seminary. Class time for MA and DMin are the same, however pre- and post-course requirements will differ. Be sure to read this class prospectus so you understand course the requirements.
DR. TOM STALLTER has 18 years of missionary experience in the Central African Republic and Chad in the areas of church planting and development, leadership training, mission administration, and famine & economic relief. He has written various articles and conducts regular seminars on intercultural issues and intercultural cooperation. He began teaching at Grace Seminary in 1997. His most recent research is on the challenge of multicultural worship.
