This class will focus on using written and electronic communication media to extend the reach of the church, and to extend one’s personal ministry.
GOALS:
- To gain a broad overview of how churches and individuals can utilize articles, books, websites, blogs, and other communication media to impact the local community and the world for christ.
- To understand how to craft effective communications for local and national media in news, feature, and opinion formats.
- To get an inside look at the publishing process—the making of books, how editors make decisions, how to evaluate whether an idea is worthy of a book process, and what is involved in bringing a book to publication.
- To sharpen writing skills with reminders of the basics of good writing—use of strong verbs, succinct sentences, appropriate style, and well-crafted paragraphs.
WHO WILL BENEFIT:
- Those interested in increasing visibility of their church in local news media.
- Potential authors of articles and books who may wish to be published.
- Those interested in exploring some new technologies to communicate with current and potential church family members.

TERRY WHITE is executive director of the Brethren Missionary Herald Company, where he serves as editor of FGBC World, publisher of BMH Books, and content provider for BMH’s two websites and daily blog. He has taught journalism and communications at six Christian colleges, served as vice president of communications for Chuck Colson’s Prison Fellowship Ministries, and currently teaches several dozen writing students online through the Jerry B. Jenkins Christian Writers Guild. He has founded a number of publications including The Christian Communicator, a monthly magazine for Christian writers, editors, and communicators. Additional resources persons including BMH Books senior editor Jesse Deloe will participate, as well. |
